Rot is deepening in the UPA Govt
by Dina Nath Mishra

Growing contradictions between the UPA and the Left Front, their supporters from outside, have sprouted to the level of ridiculous. What is the political scenario as of today? Take for example the events that have taken place in the last few days.

The bloodbath of Nandigram brings back the memories of Jalianwala Bagh. More than one newspaper recalled the Beijng massacre of Tiananmen Square where Chinese youths striving for democracy were crushed to death by socialist Chinese Army. It is reported that at least 14 people fell to the bullets of the police. However, nobody is sure of the correct toll as no one including Mamata Banerjee was allowed to enter into the combat area cordoned off by the policemen. Even the Left have speculated the casualties at much higher number of people dead. Nobody should be surprised if the final figure of dead touches 100 and those of injured 1000.

The only crime of these people was that they loved their land, a source of their livelihood, and did not want to part with it, therefore, they did not comply with the Government's land acquisition orders. What is noteworthy is that a large number of CPM cadre participated in this ghastly game. Media persons, who could sneak into that area were taught lesson of their life. A few of them saved their life by hiding in the houses of Trinamool supporters. Today, CPM stands isolated in the Left Front. Many State Ministers belonging to Left Front parties have been critical of Government's handling of the situation. It is the largest killing of people by police in the recent decades. Indeed, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's Government is "most civilised" Government.

A day before Nandigram killings, Lok Sabha witnessed a virtual civil war in the UPA camp. When DMK Minister rose in the house to table Maritime Bill 2007 for establishment of Maritime university in Chennai, CPM members stormed the House in a bid to snatch the Bill from the hands of the Minister. Somnath Chatterjee failed to discipline his own party members.

The UPA Government came into existence, with dozens of contradictions. The Cabinet included half a dozen Ministers who should have been jailed. A number of RJD Lok Sabha members are engaged in legal procedures for avoiding jails, of course with the help of the Government whose existence depends on them. The ominous factors were evident on the very first day. The Left Front, where main parties CPM and CPI, with a past record of harbouring anti-national activities and to guide the public's opinion through ruinous theories and sloganeering of anti development. The UPA further includes a party like NCP, which had split from the Congress on the question of leadership of Sonia Gandhi who happens to be of foreign origin. DMK is a category apart.

When the UPA came to power I commented that four witches joining together don't make a beautiful woman. I don't like to use of word witches for the Congress, a historic party of illustrious past, but then I see the other side of it, which has thoroughly institutionalised corruption and dynasty's expertise in putting blame for it on the heads of Chief Ministers like Bhajan Lal, Gundu Rao, Jagan Nath Mishra.

Likewise, dynasty taking credit for every electoral victory but blaming the failure on State party leaders. Running the party by coterie has been completely internalised in the Congress scheme of things. The result, therefore, is that Sonia's leadership, which is idolised as unifier of the party, has ultimately proven to be destroyer of the party. Bihar, Kerala, Karnataka are examples. The Volker Report is recent example of the blame game, Natwar Singh was pinned and Sonia's skin was saved at his expense.

Finally, dozes of Muslim appeasement have been increased manifold. It has been an old Congress tradition. They successfully created Muslim votebank and befooled them. This time, in Andhra they announced five per cent reservations for Muslims in Government jobs knowing that religion based reservations are unconstitutional. The same happened to increase in reservation quota for Muslims in AMU. The courts vetoed both these decisions. The IMDT Act, not only saved infiltrators but also encouraged them, was declared unconstitutional with adverse harsh comments from the court. Sachar Report is a mega-step in deceiving Muslims. Eminent Constitutional Lawyer in Supreme Court, KN Bhat, opined that as per constitutional requirements of Articles 266 and 283 not a single rupee can be drawn for a religion specific cause either by an ordinance or any other legal manner, The recommendations amount to cheating of Muslim laity.
