Nashik Boy Wins Gold in Astronomy Olympiad

Fifteen-year-old Viraj Deshpande is modest about his achievements. Speaking to him, you wouldn't be able to make out that he has become an idol for many youngsters, who are impressed with his intelligence and academic abilities. And for good reasons too. Viraj has brought acclaim to India by winning the 1st prize at the Xth International Astronomy Olympiad held at Bejing recently. Viraj first learnt about the Olympiad, when in the 9th standard, he read about it in the newspapers. He applied for it. There was no examination centre in Nashik at that time, but he went to Pune and was selected for the national camp. He didn't make it to the international round though. He tried again. This time, in the under-18 age group, and sailed through smoothly. "I had heard famous mathematician Mohan Apte's talk on astronomy and I was drawn to the subject," recollects Viraj. The 20-day national training camp at the Nehru Science Centre opened for him the opportunities to learn from India's best scientists and academicians. He interacted with former students who had represented India at the Olympiad. "It was a great exposure," Viraj says. The Indian team proved their mettle and brought back five golds, one silver and two bronze medals. Viraj won gold in astronomy. "We were working as a team and that clicked. We knew we could take India to greater heights and we did that," he says, a sense of pride reflecting on his face. Today, many students and parents come to meet him. His humble house in midtown is filled with bouquets and greeting cards.

Sify Launches The World's First Online Video Cricket Scorecard

Sify Ltd, (Nasdaq:SIFY), India's premier Internet, Networks and eCommerce services company has hit a six with the launch of the world's first online video scorecard (VSC) on its broadband website, www.sifymax.in this cricket season. Announcing the launch, Mr. Surya Mantha, Sr. Vice President, Interactive Services, Sify Limited, said, "Sify has acquired exclusive Internet rights (India territory) for the next 12 ODIs; 7 matches against Sri Lanka and 5 against South Africa. As part of the agreement, Nimbus will provide Sify with a live stream for all the matches." "The VSC features live video clips of all the 4s and 6s hit in a match along with their replays. The fall of each wicket, how the bowler took the wicket, the catch taken and run-outs are also available for viewing along with the conventional scorecard. The integration of live video has transformed the hitherto plain-vanilla scorecard into an absorbing broadband product available for free, at the moment, on Sify Max," added Mr. Mantha. The scorecard is updated on the fly with short video clips to enable a user to follow the action on the field as it unfolds. We call it instant highlights, unlike on a TV channel where the highlights are available only after the end of a match or an inning. For a cricket fan who has missed an interesting match, the scorecard will help in reliving the thrill of the contest, shot by shot. What's more, he has full control over what shot or fall of wicket to watch. Not once but any number of times. Sify is among the largest Internet, network and e-Commerce services companies in India, offering end-to-end solutions with a comprehensive range of products delivered over a common Internet backbone infrastructure. This Internet backbone reaches 146 cities and towns in India. A significant part of the company's revenue is derived from Corporate Services, which include corporate connectivity, network and communications solutions, security, network management services and hosting. A host of blue chip customers use Sify's corporate service offerings. Consumer services include broadband home access, dial up connectivity and the iWay cyber cafe chain across 132 cities and towns. The company's network services, data center operations and customer relationship management are accredited ISO 9001:2000.
